Scientific Posters
Each summer, RockEDU immerses high school and undergraduate students in authentic, mentored research. These posters showcase the science explored and the growth of students as emerging researchers.
In this research group, students collected samples from New York City waterways and used DNA-based methods like PCR and sequencing to study local biodiversity. They also explored how citizen science and participatory research support environmental conservation. The Biodiver-city of NY Waterways was lead by RockEDU Fellows Brigid Maloney, PhD (Postdoctoral Fellow, Jarvis Laboratory) and Mike Mazzucco, (MSTP Fellow, Darnell & Orange Laboratories).

In this research group, students learned PCR and CRISPR-Cas13 techniques to develop rapid cancer diagnostics. They also examined how discoveries move from the lab into practice, including patents, FDA approval, and clinical use. Based on research from the Simon Laboratory, Cancer Diagnostics was led by RockEDU Fellows Rose Wang, PhD (Postdoctoral Fellow) and Jeannie Carreiro (Graduate Fellow).

In this research group, students investigated brain regions that control feeding behavior. They studied how stress and environment can alter these circuits, leading to maladaptive eating behaviors such as binge eating or anorexia. Centered on research from the Friedman Laboratory, Feeding Frenzy was led by RockEDU Fellows: Adam Wang (MSTP Fellow); Jose Mendoza Lopez (MSTP Fellow); and Theresa Haunold (Graduate Fellow).

In this research group, students grew skin stem cells in culture and used microscopy to track their growth and behavior. They tested how different signals influence decisions like self-renewal or differentiation, and how errors in these processes can lead to disease. This work was centered on research from the Fuchs Laboratory and run by RockEDU Fellows Charlotte Bell (Graduate Fellow) and Deniz Abdusselamoglu, PhD (Postdoctoral Fellow).
